The Sunshine Closet Remodeling Project, 2025

In February 2025, Ground 5 Gives Back, a nonprofit organization based in Atlanta, will join forces with The Feinstein Foundation, located in Rhode Island, to enhance a dedicated space at Evoline C. West Elementary School in South Fulton County. This initiative will redesign “The Sunshine Closet,” that currently serves as an invaluable resource aimed at assisting students from families experiencing financial difficulties, ensuring they have access to essential items and the self-assurance necessary for success. The Sunshine Closet provides jackets, backpacks, uniforms, personal hygiene products, everyday clothing, shoes, undergarments, and nonperishable food items, all available to students and their families. Our objective is to transform this room into a lively, welcoming, and enjoyable environment that aligns with its uplifting name, leaving students empowered and confident.

This collaborative effort follows a meeting honoring American philanthropist Mr. Alan Shawn Feinstein, the founder of The Feinstein Foundation. In February 2024, Mr. Feinstein was awarded the G5 Gives Back Lifetime Achievement Award and was recognized as the Honoree of the 3rd Annual G5 Gives Back Soirée on November 16, 2024. Mr. Feinstein was particularly touched by the generosity displayed by 4th grader Skylar Fleming and her father, Sam Fleming, the founder of G5. As a result, he designated Skylar as an Honorary Feinstein Jr. Scholar and honored Evoline C. West as an Honorary Feinstein Leadership School. This recognition means that Evoline C. West is among 216 schools to receive annual donations and is the only institution outside of New England in the United States to do so. Mr. Feinstein’s mission is to inspire kindness in young people by encouraging them to commit to performing good deeds for others.

Unfortunately, on September 7, 2024, Mr. Feinstein passed away. However, thanks to our valued ongoing partnership with The Feinstein Foundation, Evoline C. West will continue to benefit from these annual grants, which will help keep The Sunshine Closet well-stocked for families in need. This project holds special significance for Sam Fleming, the founder of G5. His passion for giving was ignited in 2010 when he first encountered Mr. Feinstein’s quote on a school wall in Rhode Island: "Helping to better the lives of others is the greatest of all achievements."

The renovation is scheduled for February 17-18, 2025. The newly renovated Sunshine Closet will be unveiled on February 20, 2025, at Literacy Night at Evoline C. West Elementary! District and school board members are expected to attend for the reveal!

The project will be spearheaded by Isaiah Swain from The Swain Group with the support Marquiest Zene of Westgate Renovations, under the artistic direction of Lori Smith and with support from artist A. Aku. Additional sponsors include G5 founders Sam and Marchelle Fleming.
